Byron J. Hurd

March 16, 1932 ~ September 22, 2017 (age 85) 85 Years Old

Byron Johnson Hurd, age 85 of Cheboygan passed away Friday, September 22, 2017 at Munson Hospice House in Traverse City. He was born March 16, 1932 in Cheboygan, the son of Byron and Viola (Johnson) Hurd. On August 19, 1977 in Traverse City, Byron married Carolyn Mellberg who survives.

Byron pastored in several churches in Michigan for over 20 years. He also drove for the North Star Bus Lines for over 20 years and did umpiring for ASA softball. He enjoyed deer hunting and was an avid Detroit Tigers fan.

Besides his wife Carolyn, Byron is survived by two step daughters, Susan Curnow and Cheryl (Bill) Sullivan, both of Traverse City, two grandchildren, Natalee Groesser Hatton and Patrick Sullivan, four great grandchildren, Andrew, Nik, Alex and Logan Hatton, all of Traverse City, two step grandchildren, Jason (Sarah) Sullivan of Columbus, OH and Christopher (Ali) Sullivan of Traverse City, three step great grandchildren, Charlotte Sullivan of Columbus, OH and Riley and Owen Sullivan of Traverse City  and three brothers, Wendell of Detroit, Edgar of Byron, MI and Lionel of Rockford. He was preceded in death by his step great grandson, Ambrose Sullivan. 

The funeral service will take place at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church on Tuesday, September 26, 2017 at Noon with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the funeral service. Pastors John Bailey and Carlson Becker will officiate and burial will take place at Pinehill Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or Munson Hospice House. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
