Clifton "Lindy" Maves

Clifton "Lindy" Maves, 86, of Indian River, surrounded by family and friends, passed away Thursday, Oct. 13, 2016 at McLaren Northern Michigan H ospital in Petoskey.

 

A memorial luncheon will be held on Saturday, November 12th, 2016 at the Tuscarora Township Fire Station in Indian River from noon to 6 p.m.

 

Lindy was born May 25, 1930 in Boyne City.  He was the son of Leslie Maves and Nora Gillespie  He grew up in Boyne City and graduated from Boyne City High School in 1949.

 

On November 16, 1951 Lindy married the love of his life, the former Ethel Niswander in Boyne City.  Promising to be with each other for 56 years, the couple made their home in Indian River where they raised their family for 65 years.  Lindy was employed as a tree trimmer for Consumers Power Co. for 42 years, retiring in 1994.  He was recognized for being number 1 in productivity for all crews in the state of Michigan.  He loved the outdoors; camping, fishing, hunting, gardening, berry picking and feeding the wildlife.  Almost everything that he enjoyed was done with family from children to great grandchildren.  In his younger years Lindy coached little league baseball and throughout his life he loved attending Inland Lakes sporting events including volunteering to work the chains at football games.  Lindy was instrumental in the development of Cooperation Park in Indian River and served his community as a volunteer fireman with the Tuscarora Township Fire Department for 25 years.

 

He is survived by his wife, Ethel; children, Allen (Trudy) Maves of Indian River, Nina Maves of Indian River, Wayne (Sandy) Maves of Indian River, Lind Maves of Gaylord, Darrell (Kristy) Maves of Indian River; 13 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; brother, Wayne (Marsha) Maves of Petoskey; several nieces and nephews.  Besides his parents, Lindy was preceded in death by his grandson Steven Maves, granddaughter Megan Maves, great grandson Kaleb Maves, and siblings Maynard and Jim Maves, Retha Kirby and Ann Kirby.
