Edwin L. Long

Edwin was born on January 25, 1933 in Boyne City, the son of Emery and Sarah (Hiar) Long and was raised in Boyne City.  In February of 1953, Edwin enlisted in the US Army and proudly served his country with the 12th Tank Company, receiving his honorable discharge in 1955.

Edwin returned home and on October 24, 1959, married the love of his life, Loretta Daniel and made their home in Petoskey.  Edwin went to work at Harold Baird Plasterers for over 20 years before going to work with Don Jepson Excavating for a time, as well as helping with maintenance at the Petoskey Knights of Columbus Hall and St. Francis Cemetery.

Edwin loved being out in nature.  He enjoyed gardening, fishing, hunting, and cutting wood, as well as doing puzzles and playing cards.  He was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Parrish and the Petoskey Knights of Columbus.

He is survived by his wife, Loretta; 3 children, Sharon (Thad) Hofbauer, Wanda (Rob) Smith, and Glen (Julie Williams) Long; 6 grandchildren, Samantha (Brian) Gorney, Jennifer (Thomas) Loomis, Colin Smith, Owen Smith, Tessa Long, and Meghann Martin; 4 great grandchildren, Olivia Hofbauer, Dustin Gorney, Ella Mae Loomis, and Amelia Loomis; siblings, Thomas (Nancy) Long, Ethel (Harry) McFall, Joyce (Ed) Pruetz, and Versa (Ed) Ventline; and by many nieces and nephews.

Edwin was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Shirley Ann Long; siblings, Erven Long, Martina Long, Donna Brooks, and Emery Jr.

The family will receive friends on Tuesday, October 4th from 6-8pm at the Stone Funeral Home with the Rosary being recited at 7:30pm.  The family will receive friends again on Wednesday, October 5th from 10-11am at the Gathering Space at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Petoskey, with the funeral Mass at 11:00am.   Burial will be in St. Francis Cemetery.
