George W. BancroftAugust 9, 1932 ~ September 2, 2017 (age 85)
George W. Bancroft, age 85, a lifelong resident of Bancroft St. in Cheboygan, passed away Saturday, September 2, 2017 at Hancock haven. He was born August 9, 1932 in Cheboygan, the son of George H. and Margaret A. (Curran) Bancroft. On March 12, 1956 in Mackinaw City, George married Della Sova.
George was inducted into the U.S. Army in February of 1954 during the Korean war and was honorably discharged in January of 1956. Upon his discharge, George returned home to Cheboygan and had worked at Marx Brothers Machine Shop, Milebecks Machine, Detroit Tap & Tool and finally RKC Machine retiring in 1994. George was an avid reader and enjoyed woodcarving, hunting, fishing, calligraphy, tinkering and had a special affinity for paintbrushes and pin stripping tools, and had “branded” pretty much everything he owned.
Survivors include his wife Della of Cheboygan, four children, Eric (Janelle) Bancroft of Mackinaw City, Karen (Kevin) Hellman of Chicago, Bob (Amanda) Bancroft of Scottsdale, AZ and Tamara (Dennis) Ingamells of Rochester Hills, his brother, Tom Bancroft of Cheboygan, 11 grandchildren and four great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, his son, Roger Bancroft and his siblings, Ralph Bancroft, Helen Carlson and Betty Duffiney.
The funeral service will take place at St. James Episcopal Church on Wednesday, September 6, at 1:00 PM with the family greeting friends beginning at 11:00 AM. Rev. Lewis Crusoe will officiate and burial, with full military honors, will take place at Pinehill Cemetery. Memorial contributions in George’s name may be directed to the church. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
