Welcome to the memorial page for

Hildegard "Hilde" (Weschta) Greer

August 8, 1926 ~ September 27, 2016 (age 90) 90 Years Old

Hilde Greer, resident of Carp Lake since 1977, died Tuesday, September 27, 2016 at McLaren Northern Michigan.  Hilde was preceded in death by her husband of 32 years Johnny in 1979, and by her son John in 2014.

Hilde was born near Vienna Austria on August 8, 1926, her parents were Karl and Josephine Weschta. At the young age of 14 she was forced by circumstances to take a job working as a domestic in a hotel and restaurant in Vienna.  As with everyone living in Europe in the 1930’s, the rise of Hitler’s Germany and its move to annex Austria in March of 1938 changed the course of Hilde’s life from that moment on.  With the eventual defeat of Germany at the close of WWII, Hilde met a young American GI by the name of Johnny Greer, whose unit was assigned to her area of Austria.  They became close friends and then with time, fell in love and were married.  The two eventually settled in Dearborn where John worked for Ford Motor Company. Together they raised one son, John. Hilde and her husband John retired in 1974; in 1977 the couple moved north to Carp Lake and remained.  As mentioned previously both Hilde’s husband and son have preceded her in death.

Hilde is survived by a few extended family members and several close friends.

Her life will be remembered and celebrated with a Funeral Mass that will be led by Fr. Dennis Stilwell on Tuesday, October 4, 2015 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Anthony's Catholic Church.  Visitation will be held in the church gathering space beginning at 9:30 a.m.  She will be laid to rest next to her husband and son in Lakeview Cemetery in Mackinaw City.

Hilde’s wartime experiences were described in more detail in an article by Beth Anne Eckerle in the 2014 edition of Imagine Magazine, that article and video may be found at www.emmetcountyarchive.org
