Jeanne Doherty

Jeanne Doherty died July 4, 2017 at the Hiland Cottage. Until mid-March of this year she had been living on her own in her two-story house. She was born nearly a century earlier, on September 10, 1917. Her parents were Charles and Roxy Parrish Galster, and they preceded her in death. Her husband, William A. "Duke" Doherty preceded her as well.

She is survived by her son Patrick (Karen) Doherty and daughter, Constance Doherty, all of Petoskey. Additional survivors include her grandchildren Colin Doherty, and Lauren (Tim) Myers, and great-grandchildren Jack Campbell and Zane Myers, also all of Petoskey.

Jeanne was born in Petoskey, and graduated from Petoskey High School in 1934.

Upon graduation, she embarked on a train trip with her three aunts that went to the west coast and into Mexico as far as Mexico City. This sparked her interest in travel.  Later, she went to Spain, England, Ireland, and Scotland with her husband. That fall she went to the Detroit Society of Arts and Crafts, now called the Center for Creative Studies and later obtained a degree in interior design. Returning to Petoskey, she worked at various jobs. These years were high-lighted by skiing down Eddie's Hills' east of town, and dance parties atop the dunes at the Petoskey Bathing Beach, now the Petoskey State Park.   During the war, she returned to Detroit and worked at the United Artists' film building. She married Duke Doherty in Detroit on June 22, 1946.

Jeanne was a very generous person. Even when money was tight, she gave all she could to anyone who needed help. She loved all animals (except of course, snakes), but especially dogs and English setters were her absolute favorite. She also loved gardening, going to the beach, dinners with family or friends, and reading. She also loved Petoskey and often mentioned how lucky she was to live here.

At her request, there will be no funeral.
