John "Jack" Herzog D.O.

John B. (Jack) Herzog D.O. 84yrs. of Naples, Florida and Boyne City, Michigan died at his summer home on Lake Charlevoix, Michigan after a lengthy illness.

Jack was born in Brainerd, Minnesota to Eugene C. and Ann L. (Schneider). The Eugene Herzog family traces to Morris, Indiana arriving in 1849 from Switzerland and Germany. He graduated from St. John Preparatory School, St. John’s University in Collegeville, Minnesota, and the College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Des Moines, Iowa. Summers were spent in the boundary waters of Northern Minnesota and Canada.  Jack continued his medical education with an internship at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio, 3 years general practice in Bellbrook, Ohio, and four years residency in Orthopedic Surgery at Grandview Hospital in Dayton. During his internship he met and then married Ruth Ann Back on July 7, 1956. After his residency, Jack and Ruth and their family moved to Flint, Michigan where Jack was in an Orthopedic Surgical Practice for 35 years. During this time he was active in local and state orthopedic boards and societies. He was named a fellow and life member of many associations, namely the American Osteopathic Association, American Orthopedic Association, International Arthroscopic Association, and American Medical Association. He was on the staff of Lapeer County General, St. Joseph, Flint Osteopathic, and Genesis Hospitals. He was a clinical professor at Michigan State University; and trained students during orthopedic rotation and residency. Jack was a pioneer in arthroscopic surgery and joint replacement, and assisted in the development of necessary instruments for these procedures.

Jack and Ruth and their family spent many seasons on Lake Charlevoix beginning in the 1960’s. Jack loved the seasons, the lake, the woods, his vineyard, Isle Royale, golf with his sons, and family times.

 

After retirement in 1993 and moving to Naples, Florida he was a painter, woodcarver, pianist, and vintner; often went on skiing, canoeing, and hiking trips with his children; and was a volunteer roofer for Habitat for Humanity.

Jack supported Youth Haven, Habitat for Humanity, Catholic School Education, and deeded the Grunow Farm in Boyne City to Little Traverse Conservancy.

He was a member of Wyndemere, Wilderness, and Royal Poinciana golf clubs in Naples and Walloon Lake country Club in Michigan, and he enjoyed many good times with family and friends there. Jack was also a member of the American Wine Society.

 

Starting in 1948, Jack was able to travel all parts of the world with his family and friends.

While at St. Johns, Jack became an oblate in the order of St. Benedict taking the name of Martin and maintained a strong catholic faith throughout his lifetime. He was a member of St. William Catholic Church in Naples and St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Boyne City.

Dr. John will be remembered as a gentleman of warmth, sincerity, dignity, professional expertise and generosity.

Jack is survived by his wife Ruth, sons Joseph E. Herzog, Matthew P. Herzog (Suzanne Simpson Herzog), John B. Herzog jr. (Sandy Chambers Herzog), Ann K. Herzog Fowler (Bradley Fowler M.D.), grandchildren Ryan, Haley, Morgan, Michael, Jack Jr., Henry Herzog, and Kendall and Ben Fowler. Sister Mary Emberger (Robert), brother Peter H. Herzog (June Wheeler). In addition to his parents, Dr. Herzog was predeceased by brother Eugene C. Herzog (Sally).

The family will receive friends at 10:30A.M. before the 11:00 A.M. Mass at St. Matthew’s Catholic Church in Boyne City, MI. Burial in Maple Lawn Cemetery, Boyne City.
