Joyce (Green) King

Joyce King, 85, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, June 14, 2017 at Hancock Haven in Cheboygan.

Joyce (Green) King was born the daughter of Tom and Dolly Green, July 13, 1931.  Joyce’s life began on a small farm in the boot-heel of southeast Missouri.  No stranger to hard work, Joyce liked to share her experience of picking cotton as a child.  This may have contributed to her love of textiles, colors and fabrics.  This love is something she would enjoy and share for many years as a Home Economics teacher for Cheboygan Area Schools.

Joyce would marry a local boy, Everett (Louie) King in 1953, while Louie was stationed at the naval base in Pensacola, Florida, where they would start their family.

In 1957, Louie began working for the Department of the Interior, and the young family relocated to Ludington, and would soon make their way to Cheboygan.  Joyce taught wherever the family moved, but spent 29 years as an educator in Cheboygan.  She was passionate about what she taught and believed that everyone (man or woman) should know how to provide a healthy, balanced meal, sew and repair their own clothing and live within their means.  Joyce was the original “re-purposer” and took pride in finding something, refurbishing it and creating something new.  The knowledge of how to bring an artistic eye to common everyday objects was something she would share with hundreds of students over the years.

One of her greatest joys was her beloved Bridge Club.  This circle of friends cooked, ate, laughed and shared joys and sorrows for over 40 years.  Her Bridge Club “sisters” were some of the most important people in her life.

Joyce loved the water and the beautiful summers in Northern Michigan.  She was passionate about swimming and spend hours teaching her children and grandchildren how to swim.  Summers were filled with swimming, craft projects and learning for two generations of King children.

Surviving are her husband, Louie, three children, Everett Louis (Nicole) King III of Evergreen Colorado, Sam (Christine) King, and Kathryn (Tony) Johnson, both of Cheboygan,  6 grandchildren:  CJ, Sam, Eleanor, Ben, Hannah and Carson, a brother Tom Green and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her sisters Naomi Tupper and Mmemae Spencer, a brother Otto Green and a nephew Tom Tennant.

A memorial service will be held on Sunday, July 16, 2017 at 1:00pm, with the family greeting friends beginning at noon, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan, with Chaplain Diane Myers officiating.
