Leo Charles Johnson

Leo C. Johnson Jr., 88, of Cheboygan, passed away on September 28, 2017 at McLaren Northern Michigan in Petoskey.

Leo was born on April 1, 1929 in Sioux City, Iowa, the son of Leo Johnson Sr. and Katheryn (Groniga) Johnson. He grew up in Flint, Michigan and attended school at Flint Northern High School. On December 6, 1947, he married Marion Grimske. This December they would have celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary.

Leo served as the supervisor of plant security at Buick Motor Division for 37 years, retiring in 1986. Leo loved sports; he was a co-captain of the 1947 Flint Northern State Basketball Champions and a baseball player for the Detroit Tigers Organization for two years. He was also an usher at St. Thomas for many years and a past president at the Cheboygan Golf and Country Club. Leo was also a member of the Greater Flint Hall of Fame. Leo’s hobbies included fishing, hunting, golf, bowling, carving, woodworking, and caring for his acreage. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.

Leo is survived by his wife Marion, his children; Randy (Margaret) Johnson, Rick (Patti) Johnson, Teri (Jerry) Provorse, Marty (Venita) Johnson, and Linda (Paul) Householder, grandchildren; Wendy (Matt) Biety, Randy (Carolyn) Johnson Jr., Bill (Kelli) Johnson, Mike (Andrea) Johnson, Cheryl (John) Argento, Audrey Johnson, Jayme (Nate) Robinson, Justyn Kyle, Heather Williams, and Nate Householder, 13 great grandchildren, a half-brother Cliff (Carol) Lutz, and a brother in law and sister in law Frank (Lois) Grimske and many nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, and his step parents David Lutz and Hazel Johnson.

Visitation for Leo will be held on Tuesday October 3rd from 2-4pm and 6-8pm at the Nordman Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan. A funeral will be   held on Wednesday, October 4th at 11am, with an hour of visitation prior at St. Thomas Lutheran Church.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to the St. Thomas Foundation Roof Fund or the Cheboygan Golf and Country Club.
