Harbor Springs resident, Louis R. Czerkie passed from this life peacefully in his home surrounded by family in the early morning hours of Friday, March 17, 2017.
His family invites friends to join them on Tuesday, March 21, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Stone Funeral Home to remember and celebrate his life. Visitation will begin at 10:00 a.m.; the service will be led by Fr. Dennis Stilwell of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
Louie was the youngest of eight children born to Michael and Krystyna (Kondrad) Czerkie on August 2, 1930 and the last surviving member. He was a graduate of Petoskey High School, Class of 1948. On January 11, 1951 Louie enlisted in the United States Navy. Louie served aboard the USS Orion, a submarine tender, as a Storekeeper 2nd Class, he was honorably discharged on April 16, 1952.
For most of his working life Louie was employed by Kroger Co. where he worked in the produce department, at the time of his retirement he was Produce Manager. He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time with his friends at deer camp in Rapid River. Truth be told, he was fonder of the comradery than the actual hunting.
Louie married Patricia Wilton in 1957 and she preceded him in death on January 5, 1994. On December 14, 1968 Louie married Frances Herrick in Harbor Springs, they shared 29 wonderful years together until Frances preceded Louie in death on May 13, 1998. Louie was also preceded in death by his parents and by his sisters, Sue Kleber, Mary Ketchman, Josephine Green, Jennie Germond, Catherine Ross and Helen M. Johnson, and by his brother Stanley Czerkie.
His surviving family includes his children, Roxanne D. Hayes, Paulette K. (Mike) Bellmer, William L. (Wendy) Czerkie, Robert T. (Alexandra) Czerkie and Lawrence M. (Tanya) Czerkie, grandchildren,
Ashton K. Hayes IV, Alaxandra F. Hayes and April L. Czerkie, as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Louie’s family asks, that in lieu of flowers those wishing to honor his memory consider donations to Hospice of Little Traverse Bay or the Friendship Center of Emmet County.
