Shirley M. (Ferguson) Bergstrom

Shirley M. Bergstrom, 93, of Cheboygan, passed away Tuesday, December 5, 2017 at Hospice House of Cheboygan surrounded by her family.

A lifelong resident of the area, Shirley was born December 18, 1923 at home in Cheboygan, the daughter of Robert Benson and Kathleen Thelma (Crawford) Ferguson.  She was a daughter of a great lakes lighthouse keeper on Lake Huron and Superior, and later graduated third in her class at Cheboygan High School.  In 1944 during World War II, she was a “Rosie the Riveter” at Briggs Manufacturing in Detroit.  On October 7, 1950 in Cheboygan, she married George Reuben “Rube” Bergstrom, who preceded her in death on December 20, 1997.  She loved to babysit and visit her grandchildren and great grandchildren, and enjoyed crocheting, sewing, reading, gardening, and birdwatching, and was a member of St. James Episcopal Church in Cheboygan.

Surviving are four children, daughter Peggy (Sova) Palmer and husband L.C. of Statesville, North Carolina.  Their children, son David Snyder (Sandy Lombardi) and daughter Chloe Snyder, all of Hickory, North Carolina.  Son Brad (Molly) Snyder and children Jack Snyder and Abby Lynch, all of Raleigh, North Carolina.  Daughter Syrena (Tom) Price of San Francisco, California, and daughters Brooke Tucker, and Morgan and Emmy Price.  Son Les Palmer of Charlotte, North Carolina.

A son, Keith (Lydia) Sova of Redford Township.  Their children, daughter April (Peter) Avigne, son Phil Sova (Monica Swigart and son Wesley), all of Warren.  Daughter Tanya Shaw and son Devin.

A son Brian and wife Suzette (Preseau) Bergstrom of Gaylord, and their children daughter Hannah (Brett) Driver, and their daughter Violet Driver.  Daughter Natalie Bergstrom (fiancé, Clarke Peeples), all of Traverse City, and a daughter Brenda Bergstrom of Cheboygan, and her daughter,  Katie (Cool), and husband David Duczkowski of Ada.

She is also survived by her sister, Nancy Pries of Cheboygan, and a brother in law, Ray Morrow, also of Cheboygan, and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Reuben, a daughter, Kathleen Sova-Munn, a grandson, Todd Snyder, two brothers, Robert “Keith” Ferguson, and Gene Ferguson, and two sisters, Marjorie Robiadek, and Kathleen Morrow.

Shirley’s family will greet friends on Friday, December 8, 2017, from 2:00pm-4:00pm and 6:00pm-8:00pm, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan.  A memorial service will be held on Saturday, December 9, 2017 at 11:00am, at St. James Episcopal Church in Cheboygan, with Rev. Lewis Crusoe officiating.

Memorials may be made to Hospice House in Cheboygan.
