Stephanie (Budzinski) Skiera

Stephanie Skiera, 88, of Cheboygan, passed away Wednesday, January 18, 2017 at Hancock Haven in Cheboygan.

A lifelong resident of Cheboygan, Stephanie was born June 5, 1928, the daughter of Stephen and Bernice (Tobias) Budzinski.  Stephanie decided early in life that she wanted to be a teacher, and after graduation from Cheboygan High School, attended Cheboygan County Normal.  After completing her practice teaching portion of the County Normal curriculum, she taught for a few years starting out at the Munro South School, and continued to pursue her own education obtaining a BA degree at Central Michigan College.  She continued teaching at another Munro school, an Inverness school at the Tannery, and Birchwood School in Mullett Township.  With her degree she taught 4th grade students in the Inland Lakes school system for thirty years, a teaching career that spanned 46 years.

In 1950 at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Riggsville, she married Simon Skiera, with whom she had three children, Stephen (Brenda), Matthew(JoAnne), Michael, grandchildren, Stephen (Meri) Skiera, Susan (Jerry) Pierce, Lindsay (Jason) Bannatyne, Kristen (Zac Morrish) Skiera, and Leslie (Neil Zalud) Skiera, great grandchildren, Brendan and Kirsten Pierce, and Emily Skiera, brothers and sisters, Sy (Mabel) Budzinski, Don (Bonnie) Budzinski, and Patricia Budzinski, and many nieces and nephews.  Her husband Simon preceded her in death in 1990.  She volunteered as a greeter at Cross in the Woods Parish in Indian River, and at the Cheboygan Historical Museum for many years, and also worked bingo at her church.  She also enjoyed baking, traveling, visiting Alaska, the Hawaiian Islands, Canada and many other states, and since her retirement, has spent many winters in Florida.

In addition to her parents and her husband Simon, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Eleanor DeGrandchamp, Bernadine Budzinski, and Monica Budzinski.

Visitation will be held on Sunday, January 22, 2017, from 5:00pm-8:00pm, with a scripture service beginning at 7:00pm, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Monday, January 23, 2017 at 11:00am, the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00am, at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Shrine in Indian River.  Rev. Michael Haney, OFM will officiate, burial will be at the Shrine Cemetery in Indian River in the spring.

Memorials may be made to the Cross in the Woods National Shrine, or Hospice of the Straits.
