Susan L. (Opper) Muschell

Susan L. Muschell, 75, of Cheboygan passed away peacefully Friday, April 20th 2018 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital of Petoskey.

Susan was born on July 25, 1942 in Detroit Michigan, the daughter of John and Gertrude (Carlson) Opper, Sr.  She graduated from Cheboygan Catholic High School in 1960.  On June 26, 1971 Susan married James E. Muschell, her husband of 45 years and the love of her life.  After their marriage she joined her husband James in owning and operating United Design Associates.  Susan took evening classes at North Central Michigan College in Petoskey to expand her knowledge of business and computing.  She managed United Design Associates for over 60 years.

Susan was a hard worker and she was very compassionate and considerate.  During her early adult years, she volunteered as a Girl Scout Leader who mentored young girls while sharing her passion and respect of the wilderness with them.  For many years Susan was a member of the board of canvassers.  She valued the importance of education and proudly served on the Cheboygan-Otsego-Presque Isle Board of Education since 1985 and was president since 2005.  In her spare time, she enjoyed skiing, scuba diving, playing hockey, hunting, fishing, beachcombing for agates, traveling, cooking, reading, and spending time with her family.  In addition, she was an avid morel mushroom hunter.  Susan will be greatly missed by her family and the many people who knew her. She was admired and will always be remembered for being straightforward and lighthearted. 

Surviving are her three daughters, Jamie Muschell, Lisa Fowler, and Lynn (Greg) Stewart, her brother John (Jeannie Kenny) Opper, Jr., her sister Christy (Roderick III) Jones, and her brother Patrick Opper, eight nieces and nephews, three grandchildren and five great grandchildren.

Susan was preceded in death by her husband James E. Muschell, her brother Ronald Opper, and her niece Kendra Jones.

The family will greet friends on Tuesday, May 1 from 10:00-11:00 am at St. James Episcopal Church at 202 S. Huron St., Cheboygan, MI followed by a service and luncheon from 11:00-12:00.

Donations can be made to Saint James Episcopal Church or the family, who will decide on a charity and/or memorial of their choice. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
