Georgene May Corneillie Alger, age 79 of Boyne City, Michigan, passed away at her home on March 16, 2024 surrounded by her loving family. Georgene was born November 9, 1944, at Mount Clemens Maternity Hospital to her parents, George and Marion (Klein) Corneillie.
Georgene graduated from Mount Clemens High School in 1962 then attended Central Michigan University earning a Bachelor's Degree in Education.
Georgene married her high school sweetheart, John P. Alger, of Mt. Clemens, Michigan, on July 16, 1966 at St. Louis Church in Mt. Clemens. Together they celebrated 48 years of love until his passing in 2014.
Georgene started her teaching career in Mt. Clemens before taking some time off to have her children. In 1973, John and Georgene decided to move their family to Northern Michigan. As her family grew, Georgene returned to teaching, substituting for local school districts until finding a regular position helping seniors, and later young adults, complete their education and earn their GED. Georgene was more than a teacher during this time as she provided support and guidance to the students she taught. Georgene was active in her community as a Girl Scout Leader, TOPS Support Group, and a long-time founding member of the Boyne City School Boosters Foundation. Georgene could always be counted on to provide food or transportation for any of the numerous teams or clubs her children were involved in.
Georgene was a compassionate woman, willing to put others' needs ahead of her own.
She was a loving and devoted wife and mother. She was known to have a witty sense of humor, even during her failing health. Georgene enjoyed reading books, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and crafting. She enjoyed camping with her family, family reunions, musical theater, and playing euchre, pinochle, and board games. Georgene did not consider herself athletic, but she was an energetic fan watching her children and grandchildren participate in numerous sports. She also greatly enjoyed watching her kids and grandkids perform in drama and band.
Georgene is survived by her three children, Amy (Michael) Mansfield, of Boyne Falls; Dean (Sharon) Alger, of Boyne City; and Andrew (Jessica) Alger, of Goshen, Indiana. She had 9 grandchildren, Elizabeth, Emily, and Eric Mansfield; Alison, Kayleigh, Jacob, Jaden Alger; and Jared and John Alger. She is also survived by nieces and nephews, Kim (Michael) Evans, Gregory (Sherry) Alger, Jason (Michelle) Alger, Josh (Christina) Alger, Justine (Michael) Olszewski, Karen Smith, Todd (Kris) Corneillie, Amber Corneillie, Sarah (Kevin) Cook, and 19 great-nieces and nephews. Georgene also acknowledged honorary family including Nicole Scheek, of The Netherlands, Barbara (Moore) VanDecar, of Mt.Clemens, and Stephen, Erin, Kathryn, and Anna Zucker, of Petoskey.
Georgene was predeceased by her husband John Alger, parents George and Marion Corneillie, her brother Gene Corneillie, in-laws Gary and Barbara Alger, Larry and Judy Alger, niece Kelly Long, and great-niece Emma Corneillie.
