Betty Lee Snow Obituary

Betty Lee Hemmer Snow, 85, of Cheboygan, passed away peacefully Tuesday, March 5, 2019 at Evergreen Living Center in St. Ignace.

Betty was born October 13, 1933 in Saginaw, the daughter of Stanley and Mary (Bolton) Anderson.  She attended Arthur Hill High School in Saginaw, graduating in 1951, and then attended Central Michigan University in Mt. Pleasant, where she graduated in 1956 with a degree in Education.  She began her teaching career in Midland and Harrison before moving to Cheboygan in the mid 1960’s.  In Cheboygan she taught physical education at the old high school and then went on to teach special education at Inverness Elementary School.  In the late 1960’s, she met and married Rudy Hemmer, they had two boys, Robert and Bruce.  They divorced in the late 1980’s, but remained friends.  She helped coach athletes for both the state summer and winter games and several times accompanied athletes to the National and International Special Olympics.  Betty retired from teaching in 1991 but didn’t slow down.  She provided respite care for many handicapped young adults and their families, some of whom were her former students.  She did however, find time to travel, making trips with friends all over North America.  She made several trips to Alaska to attend the Iditarod and returned in the summer to visit friends there.  She also took trips to Nova Scotia, Isle Royale, New York, and Washington State and even a trip to Churchill, Manitoba to watch polar bears.  On August 8, 2008 she married old friend Bob Snow.  They enjoyed hunting, fishing, and traveling together until Bob’s death in 2009.  Betty suffered a stroke in late December 2012.  After several months of recovery and therapy she moved into the Evergreen Living Center where she resided until her passing.

Betty was preceded in death by her parents, and her husbands, Rudy and Bob.

She is survived by a brother Stan Anderson of Saginaw, two sons, Rob Hemmer of Cheboygan, and Bruce Hemmer of Wolverine, former daughter in law Chris Hemmer of Indian River, grandchildren Mackenzie, Jonathan, and Jeffery, brother in law Ralph Hemmer of Levering, nephew Aaron (Lori) Hemmer and grandnieces Bonnie Grace, Ella Kate, and Charlee of South Carolina.

Betty’s family would like to thank the staff of the Evergreen Living Center for their loving care of Betty while she was a resident there.
