Welcome to the memorial page for

Caecilia Hugger

July 2, 1909 ~ January 3, 2018 (age 108) 108 Years Old

Caecilia “Cilla” Neher Hugger, 108 of Petoskey, died peacefully in her sleep on January 3, 2018 at her home.

Cilla was born in Germany in 1909, the daughter of August and Maria (Utz) Neher.

After her marriage to Eberhard Hugger and immigrating to America in 1932 she learned a new language and adopted a new country.  With the onset of hard times from the Great Depression, the Huggers returned to Germany in 1938 only to get trapped during the Second World War.  During the war, Cilla protected and cared for her family.  When not bicycling to distant farms to secure food for her family Cilla would be herding them into bomb shelters at night.  In 1949, they returned to America and settled in Detroit.  After the unfortunate death of her husband in 1957 she raised her family alone.

Cilla enjoyed gardening and swimming.  She lived a life of determination and perseverance, protecting and providing for her family without complaint.  Food was always on the table and her delicious baked goods were in abundance.  She was a loving mother and grandmother and will be dearly missed but always lovingly remembered.

She is survived by her 4 children, Evelyn M. Hugger, Hans Peter Hugger, Eberhard K. Hugger, and Carol (William G.) Sbordon; and by 2 grandchildren, Katherine E. (Sean Murphy) Sbordon and William G. Sbordon III.

Cilla was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Eberhard; and by 7 siblings, Franz Neher, Josephine Neher, Elsbeth Neher, Julie Peters, August Neher, Conrad Neher, and agnes Horstman.
