Carlton Roy Howie

On the evening of June 11, 2019, Carlton Roy Howie, 86 years young, of Boyne City, Michigan, passed sweetly in to the arms of our Lord while puttering around his back yard, doing what he loved.  
Carlton was born on May 11, 1933 to William and Lois Howie and lived all his life in Boyne City.  He served in the Korean War after graduating from BCHS.  In 1955 Carlton married Shirley Yvonne Nessen and together they raised their 2 sons, Joseph and William, who were the light of his life.  
Carlton was a man of many trades - he became a barber, operating H & H Barber Shop in Boyne City.  He then went on to work at United Technologies (Essex) until his retirement.  That led to him working at the City of Boyne City in the Water Dept until retiring from there.  Carlton continued working right up to the end, spending the last 20 years working  at the car wash in town doing maintenance.
Carlton loved working in his yard and he loved his woodwork projects.  He could be found lending a helping hand to anyone who needed the extra muscle and he never forgot to pay-it-forward when the opportunity presented itself.    
Carlton was especially fond of time spent with his children.   Wednesday evenings spent with Bill, Kim and their boys were priceless.  He rarely missed showing up for coffee with Joe and the gang, 5:30 a.m. at the bus garage.  He will be greatly missed at these special times.
Carlton is survived by his sons, Joe (Lisa) Howie and Bill (Kimberlee) Howie.  Grandchildren Lea Howie (Soltis), Stewart Howie and Stephen Howie, and one great-grandchild Alayna Brie Soltis.  His brother Gordon (Gail) Howie and many nieces, nephews, cousins and many, many good friends.  Carlton was preceded in death by 2 infant sons James and Michael, wife Shirley and grandson Jesse Garret Howie.
Per Carlton’s instructions, there will be no official service.  Instead, Carlton asks that you remember him by loving a little harder and holding your loved ones a little closer.  Don’t forget to help the next one in line.  Spread kindness and compassion to those around you.  Belly laugh often.  And if all else fails, a cuss word can often fix the mood.
