Daniel Swantek

June 15, 1944 ~ June 17, 2017 (age 73) 73 Years Old

Daniel R. Swantek, 73, of Cheboygan, Michigan, passed away Saturday, June 17, 2017, at home surrounded by family.

Born in Longview, Texas on June 15, 1944, and longtime resident of Linden, Michigan, Daniel retired to Burt Lake in Cheboygan, Michigan in 1995. Daniel grew up in Flint, was a 1962 graduate of Kearsley High School where he joined the Naval Reserves in 1961. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1961-1964 as a Quarter Master 2nd Class E-5 aboard the USS Canberra-CAG-2 guided missile cruiser. In 1962 he was on board ship at the Cuban Missile Crisis.

On October 1, 1966, Daniel married the love of his life, Bernadette Urbanik at St. Agnes Catholic Church in Flint, Michigan. They celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary last October with family.

Daniel was employed as a Data Center Supervisor at General Motors, and later as a licensed builder and woodworker. He also served on the Burt Township Board for 14 years, was a Boy Scout leader, and volunteered for Area 33 Special Olympics. He was a member of Cross in the Woods Catholic Church and belonged to the Cheboygan American Legion. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, and boating. He cherished his family and friends and loved to joke and laugh. Daniel lived by the motto, "Laughter is the best medicine."

Surviving are his wife, Bernadette; four children, Ron Swantek of Cheboygan, Mike (Heather) Swantek of Holly, Kristie Matta of Orlando, Florida, and Becky Hallmark of Flint; six grandchildren, Alexandra and Adrian Hallmark, Kyle and Kory Matta, and Darrien and Aria Swantek. Also surviving are his "brothers", Charlie, Neil and Bill Tesch, and longtime friend Ken Argue.

Daniel has been welcomed into Heaven by his parents, Frank and Mildred (Seaberg) Swantek, as well as Cliff and Irene Tesch, his best friend Joe Strzynski, and hunting partner and dear friend Bob Cluckey.

 

The memorial mass will be celebrated on Friday, June 23, 2017 at 11:00am, with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00am, at the Cross in the Woods Catholic Church in Indian River. Rev. Vernon Omer, OFM, will officate. Burial with military honors will take place at the Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly on Thursday, June 29, 2017 at 11:00am.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Area 33 Special Olympics.
