Ethelen M. Paul, 97, of Cheboygan passed away Saturday, July 13, 2019 at the Brook Retirement Community. She was born June 15, 1922 in Cheboygan, the daughter of Charles and Ada (Metivier) Plaunt. On August 16, 1944 in Cheboygan, Ethelen married Theodore Mack "Ted" Paul who preceded her in death in 1983.
Ethelen was a member of St. Paul's United Methodist Church, Life member of the Cheboygan Sportsmans Club and a former member of the Order of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting, walking, drinking coffee with her friends and watching the Detroit Tigers.
Ethelen liked the color blue because it reminded her of the lake. She enjoyed going for rides to look out on the Straits and across to Bois Blanc Island where she lived from age five until she married when she was 22. During WWII, she was her father's deckhand on the ferry boat ADA M. when three of her brothers were in the service.
Survivors include her son, Stephen (Carol) Paul of Beverly Hills, MI, two daughters, Barbara Brewster and Beverly Maxwell, both of Cheboygan, eight grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren, many nieces and nephews, her dear friends and neighbors and her beloved church family. Besides her husband Ted, Ethelen was preceded in death by her three sisters, Anna Croff, Lucile Winters and Margaret Babcock and her seven brothers, William Plaunt, Howard Plaunt, Benedict Plaunt, Raymond Plaunt, Gerome Plaunt, Ignatius Plaunt and Donald Winters.
The funeral service will take place at St. Paul's United Methodist Church on Wednesday, July 17 at 11:00 AM with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Rev. Dr. John Bailey will officiate and burial will take place at Maple Grove Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Paul's United Methodist Church.
