Francis "Frank" J. Scanlon

Francis J. “Frank” Scanlon, age 94, of Cheboygan, Michigan passed away Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at his home. He was born February 16, 1922 in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, the son of Frank and Stella (Porter) Scanlon. On January 12, 1942 in Sault Ste. Marie, ON, Frank married Mona E. Reid who preceded him in death in 2009.

Frank enlisted in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII, serving in the Pacific Theatre and was honorably discharged in 1945. He re-enlisted in the Coast Guard in 1948 and retired in 1966 as Senior Chief. Upon his discharge, he and Mona retired to Connecticut. He started a second career as an electrician with Dow Chemical Company in Ledyard, CT and had also spent 20 years at William Backus Hospital in Norwich, CT as the maintenance manager, finally retiring in 1987. He and Mona moved to Cheboygan in 1991 from Griswold, CT. Frank was a life member of the V.F.W. He was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed cutting and splitting firewood, hunting, fishing and camping. 

Survivors include his three sons, Frank G. (Cathy) Scanlon of Cheboygan, John Scanlon of Ann Arbor and James Scanlon of Boyne City, five grandchildren, Patrick Scanlon, William (Denise) Scanlon, Steven Baker, Alan Baker and Joshua Scanlon, four great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Besides his wife, Mona, Frank was preceded in death by two sisters, Mary Scanlon and Virginia Fletcher.

A graveside memorial service to be held at Mt. Calvary Cemetery will be announced in the spring. Memorial contributions in Frank’s name may be directed to Hospice of the Straits in Cheboygan, MI. Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
