George A. Bodwin, Sr., of Cheboygan, formerly Mackinac Island, passed away Saturday, January 18, 2020 at his home in Cheboygan.
A resident of Cheboygan for the past four years, moving from Manton, where he had resided since his retirement. George was born July 4, 1931 on Mackinac Island, the son of George Patrick and Barbara (Perault) Bodwin. On June 30, 1950 on Mackinac Island, he married Doris Almeda Cowell. George had been employed by the State of Michigan for 42 years, retiring in 1995 as the Mackinac Island Airport Manager. He had also served on the Mackinac Island Volunteer EMS, the Fire Department for over 40 years, the school board, and owned and operated B&B Carpet Cleaning. While living in Manton, he attended Faith Baptist Church in Cadillac. George also was a member of the Sault Tribe, and enjoyed rabbit hunting and fishing.
Surviving is his wife, Almeda, four daughters, Jacklin (Dennis) Bradley of Mackinac Island, Bonnie (James) Baker of Corunna, Martha (Darwin) Hughey of Cheboygan, and Midge Ginter of Walker, a daughter in law Kathy Bodwin of Cadillac, 17 grandchildren, 23 great grandchildren, 4 great great grandchildren, a step sister, Annette “Tootsie” Gillespie, and a sister in law, Candy Smith, both of Mackinac Island, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, George Allen Bodwin, Jr. in 2012, a step brother, William Smith, a sister, Mary “Monnie” Fisher, and a grandbaby, Dana.
A memorial service is being planned in the spring on Mackinac Island, with burial to take place at the Mackinac Island cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association.
