George Stefanes

George M. Stefanes, 90, passed away Friday, August 16, 2019 at Hospice House in Cheboygan.

A Burt Lake resident for the past six years, moving from Bloomfield Township, George Stefanes was born August 29, 1928 in Detroit as the proud son of Greek immigrants, Michael and Jenny (Geralexis) Stefanes, of Samos, Greece.  George served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War where he made life long friends.  After returning home from the army and the sudden death of his father, George took over the family restaurant, Mr. Mike’s. He went on to own and operate the restaurant for 50 years, where he became known to his regular customers as "Mr. Mike". 

Surprising many, the longtime bachelor married Sherry Richardson on September 16, 1977 in Beverly Hills.

Throughout his life, George loved golfing, exercising, skiing with his family, and bird hunting with his dog, Prince.  He enjoyed spending time in his garden and was incredibly proud of his "master composter" certification.  He was also a member of the Masonic Lodge in Detroit.

Surviving is his wife, Sherry, a two sons, Michael (Nicole) Stefanes of Beverly Hills, Michigan, and Christopher (Kimberly) Stefnes of Santa Monica, California, a daughter, Alexandra Stefanes of St. Petersburg, Florida, two grandsons, Nikolas and Alexander Stefanes, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Frank Stefanes, and a sister, Gloria Kefalas.

A memorial service will be held on Thursday, August 22, 2019 at 2:00pm, at the Topinabee Community Church.  Burial will be at Mullet-Burt Cemetery in Topinabee.
