Geraldine "Gerry" D. Malenfant

Geraldine “Gerry” D. Malenfant, age 92, of Cheboygan went peacefully to be with the Lord on September 4, 2017. Gerry was born November 17, 1924 in Cheboygan, the daughter of Fred and Caroline (Schley) Malenfant.

Gerry graduated from Central Michigan University and began her teaching career at the Birchwood School where she taught for two years.  She thought she was fortunate to be earning $885 per year in salary plus $5 extra to do janitorial work, shovel the snow and start the fire.  She also taught for five years at Swede Town.  She then spent 11 years teaching children at the Aloha School #1 and finished her career at Cheboygan Junior High in 1987 after 44 years of teaching.  Although Gerry had no children of her own, she enjoyed a special relationship with her students.  Once they were in her class they were always one of her “kids”.

Gerry and her sister, Marie, enjoyed traveling and shared many of their adventures by taking their nieces and nephews on trips. She always remembered her family and friends by sending cards on birthdays, anniversaries, holidays and special occasions.

Later in life, after she retired, Gerry kept busy with visits and calls from family, friends, and former students.  She loved patronizing restaurants and visiting the casino. Gerry was greatly loved and will be missed by all who knew her.

Survivors include her sister-in-law, Gale Malenfant, 25 nieces and nephews, 38 great-nieces and nephews, her special caregiver/friends, Judy Darga and Holly Sichta, and her beloved cat, Angel. She was preceded in death by her parents and 12 brothers and sisters, Carl, Myrt, George, Fred, Leo, Harry, Frank, Edward, Paul, Kate LaHaie, Bertha LaCross, Marie Malenfant, and one nephew.

Visitation will be held at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Thursday, September 7, 2017, from 2-4p.m. and 6-8p.m., with a scripture service and rosary beginning at 7:00 pm.  The funeral mass will be celebrated on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. with the family greeting friends beginning at 10a.m. at St. Mary/St. Charles Church.  Rev. Duane Wachowiak will officiate and burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions in Gerry’s name may be directed to St. Mary/St. Charles Church Maintenance Fund.
