Harvey P. Bennett of Levering, MI, passed away peacefully, Tuesday April 3, 2018 at Medilodge in Traverse City, MI. He was born November 14, 1931 to Clinton and Ruth (Stuart) Bennett in Bliss, MI. On September 23, 1967 he married Anita Thume in Flint, MI.
Harvey served in the US Army from 1952-1954, in the 143d Field Artillery Battalion, 40th Infantry Division. During his service in the Korean Conflict he was awarded The Purple Heart, as well as the Korean Service Medal with 3 bronze stars and the National Defense Service Medal. He was also awarded with a Special Commendation.
Harvey worked as a skilled trades automobile mechanic for General Motors in Flint, MI. until he retired. He loved woodworking, carpentry, crossword puzzles, cribbage and Jeopardy.
He was preceded in death by his parents. His siblings, Stuart, Donald, Delbert, Margie and Norma. His first wife Ileta “Pepper” Widman and his wife Anita Thume.
He is survived by five children. Charmaine Boike (Rick) Flint, MI. Denise Counts (Steven)Otter Lake, MI. Dennis Bennett(Barbara)Swartz Creek, MI. Steven Bennett St. Helen, MI. and Cynthia Niswonger (Brent) Benzonia, MI. Harvey has 10 grandchildren; Stephanie, Tracy, Karen, Jill, Heather, Joeseph, Robert, Scott, Bennett & Isabella. He has six surviving siblings, Maxine, Max, Patsy, Clella, Doug and Rodney.
A celebration of life service will be held at 11:00 am, Saturday April 7 at Bliss Missionary Church, Reverend Jodi Baron will be officiating. Visitation for family and friends will be at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, MI. on April 6 from 6pm to 8pm.
