Irene Joyce Petoskey

Irene Joyce Petoskey, 92, of Levering passed away peacefully at her home early Sunday, December 2, 2018.

Irene was born on January 8, 1926, at the family home in Kegomic, Michigan, the daughter of Harry and Norma (Crossett) McCary.  She grew up in Boyne City and graduated from Boyne City High School in 1944. 

On her favorite holiday, St. Patrick’s Day, Irene married John Gasco, Sr., and they had eleven children together.  John preceded her in death on February 9, 1962.  On April 19, 1980 she married Roland Petoskey and they made their home in Flint, Michigan until they moved to their current residence at Levering in 1984.  Roland preceded her in death on December 26, 2014.

Irene, or G.-G., as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren, was a hard worker all of her life, but her greatest joy was spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.  She also loved fishing, as long as her feet didn’t touch the water!

Irene is survived by one sister, Virginia Bell of Grand Rapids, and 8 of her 11 grown children, John Gasco, Jr. of Harbor Springs, Marcia (Tom) Sutton of Levering, Harry Gasco of Vancouver, Washington, Allen (Judy) Gasco of Elmira, Deleta Smith of Harbor Springs, Regina (William) Bentley of Petoskey, Bart (Jodi) Gasco of Boyne City, and Stephen Gasco of Boyne City.  She also is blessed to leave a legacy of 33 grandchildren, 41 great-grandchildren, and one newborn great-great-granddaughter.

Besides her husbands, Irene was also preceded in death by three of her grown children, Norma (Dwight) Kolodgy, Alicia (Merle) Carson, and Joseph Gasco, and also by three of her siblings:  Alvah McCary, LaVerne McCary, and Dorothy McCary-Ward.

Respecting her wishes, there will be no memorial service for Irene Petoskey, but contributions toward her final expenses are appreciated by the family.
