Jewel M. (Lorton) McRae

Jewel M. McRae, age 90, of Cheboygan passed away Saturday, January 6, 2018 at the Hospice House. She was born April 13, 1927 in Berlin, CT, the daughter of Harold and Myrtle (Jewell) Lorton. Jewel graduated from Cheboygan High School in 1945 and on August 31, 1946 married Donald R. McRae who passed away in 1988.

Jewel had worked as the secretary to her husband Don who was the Cheboygan County Treasurer. She had served as the Commander of both the DAV and Purple Heart Auxiliaries and had been a Girl Scout leader for several years. Jewel enjoyed knitting, crocheting, playing Bunco, singing in the choir at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church and being a part of several women’s groups and the Northland Players.

Survivors include her two children, Donald Wayne (Carole) McRae of VA and Victoria Lynn (Lyle) Bennett of Cheboygan, six grandchildren, Gary (Gina) Spray of Cheboygan, Nichole Spray of Detroit, Michael (Michele) McRae of VA, Dustin (Teresea) Looman of Mt. Pleasant, Jason Looman of AZ and Paula (Ashley) Cobb of NC and nine great grandchildren, Caleb Wilkins, Sarah Cobb, Hannah Cobb, Mackenzie McRae, Megan McRae, Austin Rode, Kayla Rode, Brittany Spray and Lauren Spray.  Besides her parents and her husband Don, Jewel was preceded in death by her daughter, Deborah Sue Spray.

A memorial service will take place at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Tuesday, January 9 at 12:00 PM with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Pastor Michael Konieczny will officiate. Memorial contributions may be directed to the Hospice House or the Cheboygan County Humane Society.
