James Arnold Cone, 71 of Petoskey, passed away peacefully with his children, Tracy and Chip, by his side on May 9, 2019 at McLaren Northern Michigan Hospital.
Jim was born on June 10, 1947, the son of Aldwyn C. and Matilda Juanita (Stowe) Cone. He was a graduate from Petoskey High School in the class of 1965.
Jim joined the United States Navy and proudly served his country during the Vietnam War. Jim also served many years as a volunteer firefighter for the Resort and Bear Creek Township Fire Departments.
On October 12, 1968, Jim married the love of his life, Doriene Hathaway. Together, they had two children, Tracy and Chip.
Jim worked various jobs throughout his life, most notably at Schafer Bakeries in Petoskey as a bread truck delivery driver, at Hyde Equipment, and many years working for his brother, Butch, at Truck and Trailer as a welder/fabricator. Jim was an extremely talented builder and one of the best welders. He took great pride in his work and was a perfectionist to a fault. He built his family home on Blackbird Road, his own airplane hangar and three personal-use airplanes. His wife, Doriene, was always right by his side helping and inspiring Jim to fulfill his dreams.
Jim had a very tender heart and a great sense of humor. He will certainly be remembered for his contagious laughter and many times his tasteless jokes.
Jim is survived by his children, Tracy Cone-Sneddon and Arnold "Chip" (Toni) Cone; grandchildren, Carley and Jamie Sneddon, and their father, Andy Sneddon, and Luke and Sophie Cone; mother, Matilda "Tillie" Cone; brother Butch (Janny) Cone; sister Lynda (Gary) Doyle; many nieces and nephews; close family friend, Bill Murphy; and special friend, Kathy.
Jim is preceded in death by his wife, Doriene Cone; father, Aldwyne C. Cone; and sister, DeAnna Cramer.
There will be a funeral service at Stone Funeral Home on Monday, May 13, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. with a one hour visitation prior to the service. Rev. Ed Warner will officiate.
Jim had a deep love for all animals, yes, even seagulls, so his family has asked that in lieu of flowers, friends and family make a contribution to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in his memory.
