John L. Eustice, age 93 of Petoskey and formerly of Cheboygan, passed away Friday October 5, 2018 at Hiland Cottage in Petoskey. He was born April 13, 1925 in Cheboygan, the son of James and Mary (Shields) Eustice. On June 1, 1946 at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, John married Lova Shields who preceded him in death in 1998.
John served his country honorably with the U.S. Navy during WWII. He had worked at Procter & Gamble as a boiler operator and retired after 29 years of service. After retirement he had served as the campground host at Aloha State Park for several years. He was a member of St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus and enjoyed playing frisbee, flying trick kites, rollerblading, riding motorcycles and playing cards. He was an avid Tigers fan and celebrated 45 years of sobriety this year.
Survivors include his five children, William (Mary) Eustice of Big Rapids, Linda (Fred) Myers of PA, Joanie (Mike) Vargo of Petoskey, Mary Lou (Tim) Achterhoff of Muskegon and Pat (LeAnn) Eustice of Traverse City, three siblings, Maurice (Barb) Eustice, Robert Eustice and Aileen Bauers, all of Cheboygan, 13 grandchildren and many great and great-great grandchildren. Besides his wife Lova, John was preceded in death by two brothers, James and Mike and his sister, Mary Meden.
Visitation will take place at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home on Sunday, October 7, from 4:00 – 7:00 PM with a vigil service beginning at 6:00 PM. The funeral mass will take place at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church on Monday, October 8 at 11:00 AM with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the mass. The Rev. Dennis Stillwell will officiate and burial will take place at Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to Hiland Cottage or Guest House in Orion, MI.
