John Pasney Obituary

John “Jack” L. Pasney, 74, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday, May 19, 2018 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with his wife and children by his side.

A resident of Traverse City since 1972, moving from Cheboygan, Jack was born July 19, 1943 in Detroit, the son of Ernest and Gertrude (Blazak) Pasney. He was a 1962 graduate of Pellston High School, and later, on May 12, 1967 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, married Linda “Lynn” Mosher.

Jack made a career of working in the grocery industry.  He started in 1962 at B&C in Cheboygan as a bagger and worked his way up to Manager.  He was recruited by Kroger and later transferred to Traverse City as Grocery Manager in 1972.  When Kroger closed the Northern stores, he went to work for Carter’s IGA as Produce Manager and worked there for over 17 years in both Petoskey and Cadillac.  He won many awards and Produce Manager of the Year several times.  Because he was so skilled in every facet of the grocery industry, combined with his pleasant demeanor and love of people, he soon became the trainer for new employees.  He also spent many weeks on the road opening new stores and resetting others throughout Michigan.  He retired in 2001 but after 10 years became bored.  He applied for a part-time position in the Produce Department at Oleson’s on Hammond Road.  He would tell everyone that this was his favorite job of all and the people he worked with were the best!

Jack was always involved with his kids and their activities and attended every basketball, soccer and hockey game and was at every pageant, ice skating show and parade.  He was a YMCA Soccer Coach for 8 years, Assistant Coach and later Head Coach for Elk Rapids High School Soccer.  He took his team to the State finals in 1989 winning every game except the final where they lost to Detroit Country Day.  The team was named State Runner Up and Jack was named C-D Soccer Coach of the Year for Michigan.  He was also the first coach to have 2 girls play on the boys team in the State finals.

Jack loved to fish with the kids on Island Lake and with his son on the big lakes and hunt at the old family homestead in Cheboygan.  He always planned vacations around deer hunting, holidays and family.  He loved the Sunday excursions to Leelanau County with Lynn and looked forward to attending holiday craft shows every year.

Jack is survived by his spouse Lynn (Linda Mosher) with whom he just celebrated 51 years of marriage.  Also surviving are 2 children; Tami (Mark) Furgeson and Brent Pasney, brother Ernie Pasney Jr, brother in-law Steve (Tammy) Mosher, mother-in-law Elaine Mosher, grandchildren Amanda and Brandon, great grandchildren Owen, Arianna and MacKenzie and several nieces and nephews.

He is preceded in death by his parents, his father-in-law Vern and sister-in-law Marilyn.

Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial donation to Munson Medical Center in Jack’s name.  A special thank you to Dr. Recchia and his staff at the Munson Congestive Heart Failure Clinic, the doctors and nurses in ICU and to Dr. Amanzadeh of Munson Nephrology for the amazing care Jack received.

A private family service will be held at a later date, with burial at Pinehill Cemetery in Cheboygan.
