Jack Atten, 93 of Petoskey, Michigan, died March 5, 2019 at his home.
Jack was born January 23, 1926 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of John and Mary Reichart Atten. He grew up in Chicago and graduated from Loyola University of Chicago.
He served in the United States Army in World War II. Jack was the owner and operator of independent grocery stores in the Chicago area. He was an accomplished golfer and won several amateur tournaments in the 1940's.
On February 15, 1958, he married Anne Leach in Chicago, Illinois and raised four children in the Chicago area. She preceded him in death.
Jack married Shirley Kent Colwell on April 29, 2000, in Petoskey, where they made their home together for 19 years.
Jack is survived by his wife, Shirley Atten; children, John (Kay) Atten, Mary Jo Atten, James Atten, Anne (Marc) Johnson, Charles (Susan) Colwell, Stephen (Marci) Colwell and Kent (Jennifer) Colwell; grandchildren, Dana Smith, Chris Atten, Lauren Worley, Blake Atten, Michael and Daniel Atten, Ryan and Jack Johnson, Jack, Henry, Peter, Samuel, Addie, Will and Elise Colwell; as well as five great grandchildren.
Jack is preceded in death by his first wife, Anne; his parents; two brothers; and a sister.
There will be a Mass of Christian Burial on March 8, 2019, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church at 10:30 a.m. with a one hour visitation prior to Mass. Father Dennis Stilwell will officiate.
