Loretta Mae Smith-Ross

Loretta M. Smith-Ross, age 80, of Cheboygan passed away Sunday, September 8, 2019 at her home. She was born March 30, 1939 in Bluefield, VA, the daughter of C.M. and Delores (Taylor) James.  Loretta married Drew Smith on May 19, 1957 in Detroit and he preceded her in death in 2004.  In October of 2009, Loretta married Jim Ross of Cheboygan, MI who survives.

Loretta was a Survivor. Most of her adult life she fought – from cancer to devastating loss. Despite her personal battles, she made learning and experiencing life a priority.  Music was a central joy that she shared with her children and her gift for sewing and cooking literally covered and filled those around her.  Loretta was never afraid to tackle a mechanical challenge either. She and Drew raised their children to be resilient and hard-working and to reach beyond circumstances. She will be greatly missed.

Besides her husband Jim, Loretta is survived by three of five children, five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, and a number of other loving relatives and close friends.

Loretta requested for an intimate burial and funeral. The family wishes to thank all of those who cared for her during her last days.
