Luise (Gombert) McKenna

Luise A. McKenna, 90 of Alanson, died June 16, 2018 at her home.

Luise was born on November 12, 1927 in Frankfurt, Germany, the daughter of Theodore and Elizabeth (Bősel) Gombert.  She immigrated to the United States as a German war-bride at the age of 22 after marrying Edward “Mike” McKenna on May 20, 1948, and the two resided in Chicago for 11 years before moving to Shelby, Michigan and then to Alanson in 1983, where she resided ever since.   Her long and varied life consisted of many and varied jobs, ending as a Massage Therapist at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island.  Mike preceded Luise in death on April 5, 1988.

Luise loved nature and being out in it.  She enjoyed swimming and SCUBA diving, flowers, eagles, hummingbirds, and lavender.   She was loved by her Alanson community.  She was a very special woman that showed and showered love over everyone she met.   Luise was a helping woman and would help anyone at any time and would always have time for her family and friends.  She loved to laugh and dance and work in her gardens, as well as collect rocks… LOTS of rocks.  She was a member of the Alanson United Methodist Church and the Senior Center in Brutus. 

Luise is survived by 3 children, Liz (Lanny) Fessenden, D Christa LaFever, and Cecelia (James) Dodge; 5 grandchildren; 8 great grandchildren; 1 great great grandchild, and by a sister, Elizabeth Tietz.

She was preceded in death by her parents and by her husband, Mike.

A memorial service celebrating Luise’s life will be held on July 21st at 9am at the Alanson United Methodist Church with Pastor Susan Hitts officiating.

Those wishing to honor Luise’s memory are asked to make a donation to the McLaren Home Care and Hospice.
