Morris Gushen Obituary

Morris Lee Gushen, 79, went to be with his heavenly father on February 3rd, after battling Lewy Body Dementia.

He was born in Flint, Michigan on March 31, 1938 to Marvin and Edna (Grams) Gushen.  He met Marilyn Brewster in Cheboygan, Michigan where they were married in 1959.

Morris worked at Michigan Bell Telephone Company until his retirement in 1989.  Morris was actively involved in many organizations and activities.  He was an avid outdoorsman, enjoying hunting with his buddies at the DCI Hunt Club, sailing various Michigan Lakes as a member of the Lake Fenton Sailing Club and flying Radio Control Airplanes with the Aero R/C Club in Lennon, Michigan.  He was a member of the Cheboygan Golf Club and enjoyed golfing, not only in Cheboygan but at their winter home in Lady Lake, Florida and in Traverse City, Michigan.  He influenced the lives of many children as a Big Brother of Flint, a member of the Lake Fenton Recreation Board and the Telephone Pioneers.  He enjoyed meetings and fundraisers as part of both the Lake Ann Lions and the Cheboygan Lions.  Morris touched the lives of many people in the Cheboygan community in his membership as a 4th degree Knight with the Cheboygan Knights of Columbus Council 791.  After Morris retired and moved to Cheboygan in 1990, he was involved in teaching anyone interested in Radio Control Airplanes how to fly and build planes.  He was also a volunteer at the Cheboygan Community Hospital, helping to install Communicall for the elderly, and a member of the Cheboygan Area Arts Council.

The family would like to offer special thanks to the staff at Culver Meadows and Hospice of Michigan.  The staff gave Morris special care and grew to love him as he did them in the short time he was there.

Morris is survived by his wife, Marilyn (Brewster), daughters Teresa (Bruce) Gingerich, and Cynthia (Greg) Paro, Grandson Daniel Gingerich and Granddaughter Jamie Gingerich, 7 nieces, 9 nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and sister, Norma Jurk.

Visitation will be held on Friday, February 9, 2018 from 3:00pm-8:00pm, with a rosary beginning at 7:00pm, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan.  The Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at 11:00am, with the family greeting friends beginning at 10:00am at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan.  Rev. Jim Hayden will officiate, burial will be a Mt. Calvary Cemetery in the spring.
