Nancy Wehrenberg Obituary

Nancy Jane Wehrenberg, 92 of Walloon Lake, MI, died peacefully June 5, 2018 at Mallard Cove in Petoskey, MI following a lengthy illness.

Nancy was born on July 13, 1925 in Fort Wayne, Indiana, the daughter of George W. and Muriel A. (Baxter) Fishering and grew up in Fort Wayne.  She graduated from the South Side High School in 1943 and received her Bachelor of Arts degree from Indiana University in Bloomington, IN in 1947, majoring in History and English.  She was a member of the Pi Beta Phi Sorority.  Following college, Nancy worked at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company.

On June 24, 1950, she married the love of her life, John Philip Wehrenberg in Fort Wayne, Indiana.  They celebrated their 66th anniversary in 2016 and together they raised four children.  Following college, Nancy worked at Lincoln National Life Insurance Company until her marriage.  She resumed her career there when her youngest was in middle school.

Proud to be a homemaker, Nancy loved to sew, knit, quilt, and make crafts.   She learned to cook after marriage using the book “The Joy of Cooking”.  She excelled in baking, especially pies, cookies, and birthday cakes.  She loved to read to her children and grandchildren, instilling in them a love of books and of learning.

In Fort Wayne, she was a Cub Scout Den Mother, Homeroom Mother, and Precinct Committeewoman.  She taught Sunday School at Trinity English Lutheran Church and did volunteer work as a member of the Junior League.  She treasured her decades-long friendships as a member of the “Jolly Girls” bridge club.

After their children were grown, Nancy and Phil retired to a 1925 cottage on Walloon Lake that they updated.  There, Nancy continued her passion for gardening, even winning a prize at the Emmet County Fair for one of her roses.  She was a member of the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church, Petoskey Garden Club, Antiques Club, Boyne City Book Club, and was a docent for the Little Traverse Historical Society.

Nancy is survived by her children, Dan Wehrenberg of Chicago, Suzanne Wehrenberg of Petoskey, Ted (Linda Bryie) Wehrenberg of Fort Wayne, Beth Wehrenberg (Tom Clinger) of Grand Rapids; sister, Suzanne Carl of Lexington, KY; grandchildren, Kathryn (Pedro Boscan) Touran, Nick (Laura Samples) Touran, Molly (Fiancé Jeremy Brownie) Touran, Jack Touran, Anna Clinger, Jane Clinger, and Grace Clinger; sister-in-law, Dolores Wehrenberg; and 18 nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband Phil; brothers, Richard Fishering and G. William Fishering; as well as her son-in-law, Neal Touran.

A private family ceremony will be held at a later date.
