Norma Jean Sackett, age 98, of Indian River passed away Friday, May 11, 2018 at her son's home. She was born March 28, 1920 in Sault Ste. Marie, MI, the daughter of Russell and Lillian (McLeod) Roe. On October 3, 1942 in Plymouth, Norma Jean married Marvin Sackett who preceded her in death in 1994.
Norma Jean and Marv raised their family in Plymouth before moving to Indian River in 1969 and purchased the Indian River Hardware. She also helped with the family electrical business, Sackett Electric. She was a very active member of the Transfiguration Episcopal Church where she had played the organ for many years, the Indian River Golf Club where she had served on the board of directors and the "Monday Bunch" sewing group. She had volunteered her time with many community events throughout the years and enjoyed cross country skiing, golf, playing Bridge and knitting.
Survivors include her three children, David R. (Carolyn) Sackett of Alanson, Mary L. (Larry) Brade of Indian River and Steven R. (Linda) Sackett of Alanson, eight grandchildren, Kathryn, Jason, Jennifer, David, J., Heidi, Echo, Scott and Bonnie, 15 great grandchildren and her nephew, Michael Kenyon. Besides her husband Marv, she was preceded in death by her sister, Dorothy Kenyon and a brother, Donald Roe in infancy.
A memorial service will take place at the Transfiguration Episcopal Church on Friday, May 18 at 11:00 am with the family greeting friends one hour prior to the service. Father Tyler Richards and Chaplain John Wallace will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Inland Lakes Educational Foundation, the Tuscarora Township Fire Department or Hospice of the Straits. Arrangements are being handled by the Lintz Funeral Home.
