Norma Mae Shorter Obituary

On July 14, 2018, Norma Mae Shorter passed from this life while surrounded by her family and caring staff at the Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.

Norma was born on March 22, 1930 in Detroit, the daughter of Myrlin and Mayme (Gustafson) Davenport and was raised in Centerline, MI, graduating from McKinley Twp High School, now Pellston High School with the Class of 1947.

On November 27, 1948, Norma married the love of her life at the Pellston Methodist Church and together, Bob and Norma raised two daughters, Cathy and Diane.  Bob and Norma moved to Detroit where Norma worked as an Office Manager for Divco.  Upon returning to work when her daughters were in school, Norma worked for Kelly Services as a Social Secretary before going to work at the Champion Spark Plug Company as a Parts Buyer.  In 1987 Bob and Norma moved back north settling on Burt Lake and later Alanson.  Bob preceded Norma in death on April 20, 2018.

Norma enjoyed painting and crafts and was known from a young age to have an artistic touch.  She was a member at the Indian River Golf Club and was an accomplished golfer.  Like Bob, Norma was rather competitive while playing anything, especially with Bob.  She was known for having a great golf swing and won many trophies throughout her life.   Although she enjoyed golf and art, her greatest joy came from her family, from singing with her sisters, to spending time with her husband, children, and grandchildren.

Norma is survived by her daughters, Cathy Lynn (Gerald) Filion of Riley, MI., and Diane (Kenneth) Lamb of Petoskey.  Also surviving are her grandchildren, Stephanie Mae Dudek (Patrick “P.J.” Reedy), Robert Dudek, and Katherine “Katie” Dudek (Terrance “Terry” Elizonda) and great grandchildren Alexis and Jade; sisters, Joanne (Myrl) Keller of Charlevoix, Janet Keiser-Arrington of Mobile, AL, and Karen (Harold) Ringler of Cedar Springs, MI; and by Joan Dobias.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband of 69 years, Bob; and by her brother, Myrlin S. Davenport.

Services celebrating Norma's life will be held at the Stone Funeral Home on Friday, July 20th at 11am with Rev. David Behling officiating.  The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, July 19th from 6-8pm.  Norma will be laid to rest with her beloved husband at the Burt-Mullett Cemetery in Topinabee.
