Stephen Smith Obituary

Stephen Douglas Smith, age 72, of Carp Lake passed away Sunday, March 17, 2019 at his home. He was born February 6, 1947 in Lansing, the son of Douglas and Margaret (Higbee) Smith. On July 25, 1968 in Lansing, Steve married Martha A. Stepp who survives.  

Steve was drafted into the U.S. Army on February 14, 1968 during the Vietnam War serving with the 101st Airborne Division. He was honorably discharged in 1970. He had worked as an appraiser and assessor in Ionia for several years before going to work as a Pharmacy Technician at Sparrow Hospital, retiring in 2014. He had served as an Ionia County Commissioner for eight years and was currently serving on the board as the Vice President for the Wawatam Senior Center in Mackinaw City. He was a member of the Mackinaw City Bible Church and enjoyed nature photography, hiking, and tending to his wildflower gardens. He was also and avid metal and wood crafter.

Besides his wife Martha, Steve is survived by his two sons, Stephen Bradley Smith and Matthew (Thorn) Smith, both of Lansing. He was preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Wesley Smith.

A memorial service will take place at the Mackinaw City Bible Church on Wednesday, March 20 at 11:00 AM with Pastor Reid Nelson officiating. Memorial contributions in Steve’s name may be directed to the Gideons for the purchase of Bibles.  Arrangements are being handled by the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home.
