Thomas Dietzel Obituary

Thomas Charles Dietzel passed away peacefully in his home in Indian River, August 9, 2019, at age 63, after an extended battle with cancer. Tom was born October 11, 1955 in Detroit, Michigan and grew up in Clinton Township.  Tom was the beloved son of the late Joanne E. (Culliton) and William C. Dietzel of Clinton Township, Michigan. Surviving family include sister Cynthia J. (Dietzel) Petrack and brother in law Michael J. Petrack of Marana, Arizona; nephew Michael J. Petrack Jr. of Hamtramck, Michigan; two Aunts Ruth Overbaugh and Mary Ellen Hanson; and eight cousins and their families.

Tom was a master builder of just about anything.  Even as a high school student Tom’s ability to construct things was evident.  He was the recipient of several awards for projects he did in shop class.  Tom enjoyed many interests through his life; he was a superior downhill skier, scuba diver, motocross rider and antique truck and tractor collector.

He worked with his father at Dietzel Construction Company in many roles from equipment operator to steel fabricator and supervisor.  Former owner of Bear Creek Power Equipment of Petoskey, Michigan. He also worked at Sign and Design in Petoskey, Delta Industrial in Chesterfield and Hale Manufacturing in Brutus.

Tom and his Dad relocated to Levering, Michigan and purchased a home along with his sister and brother in law. While in Levering Tom and his Dad built their dream shop building and enjoyed several years of projects.  During his time in Northern Michigan Tom met lots of wonderful people including neighbors, people at the “round table” at the Levering Café, and people he worked with.  Tom loved to joke around with people and you knew you were special to him if he gave you a hard time.

A memorial celebration of life service will be held Saturday, August 24, 2019 at 11: 00 am, at New Hope United Methodist Church, 4516 North US 31, Levering, Michigan.

Tom requested that any remembrances be made to either St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105 or the Cheboygan County Humane Society, 1536 E. Hackleburg Road, Cheboygan MI 49721.
