Thomas Gould Whittingham Sr., 90 of Harbor Springs, died October 12, 2018.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am Saturday, November 3, at the First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs. The Rev. Kip Murphy will officiate. Friends and family are able to stream the service live on the church's website, www.fpchs.org
Thomas was born January 8, 1928, in Detroit, son of Julia Broadwell Whittingham and Henry Hudson Whittingham. He grew up in Grosse Pointe and served in the U.S. Army in South Korea in 1946-47. He graduated from the University of Michigan College of Engineering in 1951 with a Bachelor degree in Industrial and Mechanical Engineering. He was a member of Theta Delta Chi fraternity.
In 1957, Mr. Whittingham joined McLouth Steel Corporation and remained employed there until his retirement in 1993 as Vice President of Sales. In 1993 he moved to Cross Village and lived there until he moved to Perry Farm Village in 2015.
Mr. Whittingham was an avid golfer and member of the Country Club of Detroit and Pine Valley Golf Club in Clementon, N.J. He enjoyed fishing, skiing and running, which included completing three Detroit Free Press marathons. He was active in the University of Michigan Alumni Association and the football program. In 1988 he was awarded honorary membership in the Men’s Varsity M Club. Mr. Whittingham was a member of the Kiwanis Club of Harbor Springs.
Mr. Whittingham was pre-deceased by his first wife, Frances Neosho McMahon (married 45 years), and his second wife Nancy Howard (married 19 years).
Survivors include, his sister, Ann Smith of Torrington, CT; his brother, William Whittingham of Kitty Hawk, NC; two daughters, Linda Whittingham of Milwaukee, WI and Diane Gooldy of Mio, MI; one son, Thomas Whittingham Jr. of Oxford, MI; two grandsons, David Selewski of Plymouth, MI and Brian Selewski of Sterling Heights, MI; and a great-grand daughter Charley Selewski of Plymouth, MI.
The family suggests memorial contributions to be made to First Presbyterian Church of Harbor Springs.
Arrangements are being handled by Stone Funeral Home of Petoskey.
