Walter Poirier Obituary

Walter L. Poirier, 70, of Cheboygan, passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 25, 2019 at home.

A lifelong resident of Cheboygan, Walt was born May 6, 1949 in Cheboygan, the son of Hector and Rose (Merchant) Poirier.  On December 15, 1967 at St. Charles Catholic Church in Cheboygan, he married Diane Eichler, who survives.  He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War from 1967-1969, attaining the rank of sergeant.  After returning home, he was employed by Cheboygan Auto Supply, and later by United Parcel Service from 1974 until his retirement in 2006, making deliveries in the gaslight district of Petoskey. Walt enjoyed collecting, showing, buying and trading cars and other types of vehicles.  He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, and great grandson, and had a heart of gold, always willing to help someone in need.

Surviving are his wife, Diane, a daughter, Nikki Carlton of Cheboygan, a son, Ryan (Jennifer) Poirier of Indian River, six grandchildren, Michael Rogers, Austin Carlton, Alex Damgaard, and Tyler, Dylan, and Hayley Flynn, a great grandson, Dominic Rogers, three sisters, Marjorie Thibeault, and Cheryl Reed, both of Cheboygan, and Tudy (Chuck) Ketner of Illinois, and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant daughter, Tammy Lynn Poirier, a brother, Dave Passeno, two sisters, Dorothy Lancour and Dolores Pennell, and his in laws, Melvin and Leah Eichler.

A memorial service will be held on Tuesday July 30, 2019 at 2:00pm, with the family greeting friends beginning at 1:00pm, at the Nordman-Christian Funeral Home in Cheboygan.  Rev. Duane Wachowiak will officiate, burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Cheboygan.

Memorials may be made to Bishop Baraga School, the Barrier Free Project at St. Mary/St. Charles Catholic Church (Elevator Fund), or the Wounded Warriors Project.
