Alan Behan Obituary

Alan F. Behan, 82, of Petoskey, Michigan, died June 10, 2026, at Bay Bluffs Medical Care Facility in Harbor Springs.

Alan was born on June 12, 1943, in Petoskey, the son of Frank and Helen (Burns) Behan. He grew up in Petoskey and attended St. Francis Xavier School. He later completed the Assessor Program at Michigan Technological University.

On May 13, 1967, Alan married the love of his life, Shirley Ann Bianucci in Hancock, Michigan. He proudly served in the Army National Guard for five years and was called to duty during the Detroit riots of July 1967.

Alan dedicated his professional life to public service. He served as Petoskey City Assessor, State Tax Commissioner, and Emmet County Equalization Director. Holding a Level III Assessor Certification and certification as a personal property appraiser, he earned the respect of colleagues throughout Michigan. Alan retired from the City of Petoskey in 2001 after a distinguished career.

Outside of work, Alan enjoyed golfing, boating, snowmobiling, and riding his side-by-side. He especially treasured time spent with family and friends and enjoyed the outdoors throughout every season.

A devoted member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church and the Petoskey Fraternal Order of Eagles, Alan valued faith, community, and service.

Alan is survived by his beloved wife Shirley Behan; children Terri (Gary) Pierce and Steve Behan; five grandchildren Steven (Danielle) Behan, Taylor (Brandon) Carson, Cameron (Lindsey) Pierce, Cory (Emily) Pierce, and Shelby Pierce; step-grandchildren, Colton Porritt, Gracelyn Kelly, Olivia Pierce, Lucy Pierce, and Parker Pierce; great-grandchildren Kendall Behan, Callie Carson and Lainey Carson. He is also survived by Ken Provost, who, though not related by blood, was family in every way that mattered.

A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Francis Xavier Church on July 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. with a one-hour visitation prior to Mass. Father Dennis Stilwell will officiate.

Donations in Alan’s memory are asked to be directed to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society (ltbhs.org)
