Albert Louis Onyika, 77, of Petoskey, died August 5, 2022, at his home.
Albert was born August 20, 1944, in Gary, Indiana, the son of Albert, Sr. and Anne (Slobodnik) Onyika. He grew up in Chesterton, Indiana and attended Chesterton High School. He enjoyed track during his high school years.
In 1963 he enlisted in the United States Navy. He worked as a commissary-man until he was honorably discharged in 1985.
On May 18, 1968, he married Hulda Karlsdottir in Keflavik, Iceland. Together, they had two children, Cynthia and Chris, and spent 54 years happily married.
Albert enjoyed attending car racing events and working on cars and machinery of all types. He liked to travel and go camping with his family. He was a talented baker and was great at baking and decorating cakes.
He is survived by his loving wife, Hulda Karlsdottir Onyika of Petoskey; his children, Cynthia (Craig) Martin of Red Oak, Oklahoma and Chris (Kristin) Onyika of Callahan, Florida; sister, Carol Shanley of Petoskey; grandchildren, Montana (Zac) Carson, Patric Martin, Daniel Martin, Atticus Onyika and Adrian Onyika; great-grandchildren, Madelynn Carson and Fenrir Carson.
He is preceded in death by his parents; and brother-in-law, Victor Shanley.
There will be a memorial service at Zion Lutheran Church in Petoskey on Monday, August 29, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. with visitation an hour prior. A luncheon will be provided afterwards and burial will take place at Greenwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made directly to Hulda Onyika.
