Arlene Rose (Tooley) Moore, 96, passed away peacefully on May 8, 2026, at The Brook Assisted Living facility in Boyne City, Michigan, at the age of 96. She is survived by her children Dawn Peterson, Scrappy Moore, Cindy Moore, and Laura Carpenter. Her son Mitch Moore preceded her in death. She also leaves behind seven cherished grandchildren and nine loving great-grandchildren.
The following is from an obituary Arlene wrote herself:
Arlene Rose Tooley and her twin brother, Arthur, were born on July 1, 1929, in Boyne City to Rose and Lewis Tooley. They were joined by an older brother, Harold. Arlene graduated from Boyne City High School in 1947 and began her career as a secretary for the Charlevoix Conservation District. She later worked as a teletype operator for Michigan Bell in Flint and attended Hamilton Business College in Ann Arbor, where she studied advanced typing, dictation, and shorthand while working nights to support herself.
She then moved to Detroit, working for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company, before returning to Boyne City. After marrying in 1957, she raised her family and later worked as a legal secretary for Conkle and Varnum for 10 years, followed by 13 years as an executive and legal secretary at Wolverine Power Supply. She retired in 1993 but stayed active working at the Boyne City Chamber of Commerce, where she enjoyed connecting with the community.
Arlene’s family remembers that in the late 1950s she worked at Boyne Mountain as a secretary to Charlie Mall at Boyne Mountain, even selling lift tickets from a fishing tackle box. Mom was a talented artist who loved painting, ceramics, and restoring old furniture. She enjoyed collecting Petoskey stones, pudding stones, driftwood for crafts, old marbles and buttons, and silver teaspoons. Mom was known for her beautiful calligraphy-style handwriting.
Mom will also be fondly remembered for her Sloppy Joes and sugar cookies. Her favorite foods included fried green tomatoes, liver and onions, shrimp, John Cross’s whitefish, Johan’s Bakery sticky buns, and chocolate turtles. Mom’s favorite singer is Johnny Mathis. She treasured her monthly lunches with her BCHS class of 1947. Mom was active in many local organizations, including the Historical Society, Garden Club, American Legion, Boyne City Boosters, and the Boyne Community Christmas Basket. She was also a dedicated member of the Women’s Monday Study Club, Boyne City’s oldest continuing club.
Mom we all miss dearly and will love you… forever.
