Arnold Ferguson Obituary

Arnie Ferguson, 89, of Alanson, Michigan, peacefully passed away at home on March 1, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Born on October 6, 1935, in Flint, Michigan, to Lee and Reta Ferguson, Arnie grew up in Pellston, where he attended school. On April 3, 1954, he married the love of his life, Nora Granger of Alanson, and together they built a beautiful life filled with love, family, and dedication to their community.

From 1961 to 1977, Arnie and Nora owned and operated a successful gas station, garage, wrecker service, and grocery store, serving as a cornerstone of the Alanson community. After retiring, they enjoyed traveling and spent many winters in Florida, embracing a well-earned life of adventure and relaxation.

A devoted public servant, Arnie dedicated many years to the Village of Alanson and Littlefield Township. He proudly served as the Alanson-Littlefield Fire Chief, a member of the Alanson Village Council, and an active Lions Club member. He was passionate about organizing and participating in Alanson’s Fourth of July parades and was a proud member of the Fraternal Order of Police.

Arnie had a deep love for the outdoors and adventure. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and camper, and he found joy in snowmobiling—leading safaris, winning the State of Michigan Snowmobile Racing Championship, and securing multiple runner-up titles. He also enjoyed attending car shows, making pancakes for his family, taking Model A rides to Petoskey for pizza, watching birds, and ending days with sunsets at the waterfront.

Faith was an important part of Arnie’s life. He and Nora were active members of New Hope Community Church, where they cherished their church family, Pastor Paul, and Ms. Laura.

Arnie is survived by his beloved wife of 70 years, Nora, and their four daughters: Debbie (Bill) Burger, Sandy (Mike) Clark, Jody (Rich) Brown, and Tammie (Mike) Martin. He leaves behind eight grandchildren and their spouses, 13 great-grandchildren (including one spouse), four great-great-grandchildren, as well as many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his siblings, Goldie (Earl, deceased) and Melvin (Linda). He was preceded in death by his brother Gerald (Norma, deceased).

A funeral service will be held 2:00 pm Tuesday, March 4, 2025 at Stone Funeral Home, Inc. with a visitation being held from 1:00 pm until the time of service.

A luncheon will follow at New Hope Community Church (Grand Unity Center) in Petoskey.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in Arnie’s honor to New Hope Community Church.

Arnie’s legacy of love, service, and adventure will forever be cherished by his family, friends, and the community he so deeply impacted.
