Obituary

Avis Irene (Mummert) Granger, 86, of Alanson, Michigan passed away on May 26, 2022, at American House in Petoskey, Michigan.

Daughter of Leonard and Marguerite (Blumke) Mummert, Avis was born on February 19, 1936 in Petoskey and raised on a dairy farm in Brutus, Michigan where she learned to work and was always doing something. She was active in her community and graduated from Pellston High School in 1954

On July 9, 1955, she married George J. Granger at the Ayr Community Church in Brutus.

Avis was a lifetime public service leader for 39 years. She held positions as the Littlefield Township Clerk, Littlefield Township Sewer Billing Clerk, Littlefield Township Cemetery Sexton, Alanson Area Public Library President, and was on the Littlefield-Alanson Fire Board. Avis also helped build the Alanson Area Public Library and the Littlefield-Alanson Fire Department. She also worked for years with PL Frisbey in real estate.  

Avis enjoyed gardening and canning. She and George liked going to yard sales on Saturday after their morning breakfast. She also enjoyed mushroom picking and stone picking in Lake Superior. Avis loved most of all, taking care of her four sons and family.

Avis was a member of the Alanson Church of the Nazarene.

She is survived in her sons: Scott (Peggy), Greg, and Todd (Rhonda); her daughter-in-law Cathleen; her grandchildren: Kevin, Kyle, Greg, Amy, Austin (Preslye), and Autumn; her great-grandson Arlo “George”; her sister Joyce (David) Schmalzried.

Avis is preceded in death by her husband George J. and her son Brian.

Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Avis’s memory are asked by family to consider the Nazarene Food Bank or Littlefield-Alanson Fire Department.

A memorial service for Avis will be officiated by Pastor Foster Schmitt at Alanson Church of the Nazarene on June 5, 2022, at 2:00 PM. A visitation will begin at 1:00 PM.
