Barbara Jean (Truman) Hemmes

Barbara Jean Hemmes, age 86, beloved Mother, Grandmother and Great-grandmother went home to heaven on May 11, 2020 at home in Nikiski, Alaska.

She was born December 23, 1933 in Battle Creek, Michigan, the daughter of Merrill and Eunice Truman. She attended elementary school in Battle Creek and later her family moved to Petoskey, where she graduated from Petoskey High School.

In August of 1953 she married Herbert Hemmes, her high school sweetheart. After spending nine years in Grand Rapids starting their family, they moved back to the family dairy farm in Harbor Springs. There Barbara spent the next 52 years working alongside her husband and raising a family. Soon after the death of her husband and sale of Mt. Nebo Farm she moved to Nikiski, Alaska to live with her daughters.

Barbara loved her family and spent her life serving them and others by praying and caring for her children; sewing and embroidering blankets for Pregnancy Care Centers and serving and singing in her church. One of her many joys was camping in the Upper Peninsula with Herbert. Her greatest legacy was her love for her Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ.

Barbara is survived by her children James (Cyndi) Hemmes, Daniel (Mary) Hemmes, Elaine (Dale) Bakk, Rebecca (Don) Bakk; fourteen grandchildren and their spouses; and thirty-eight great-grandchildren.

Private family services are being held and Barbara will be laid to rest at Lakeview Cemetery in Harbor Springs.
