Burt Matteson Obituary

Burt W Matteson, 85 of Petoskey, died December 27, 2021 at his home.

 

Burt was born on February 21, 1936 in Jackson, MI, the son of Burt and Edna (Charter) Matteson, Sr. and was raised in Jackson, graduating from Jackson High School.  Following high school, Burt proudly served his country In the United States Marine Corp and upon receiving his honorable discharge, Burt attended Central Michigan University where he received his Bachelor’s Degree in Education. 

 

On November 23, 1968, Burt married the former Suzanne Tryban in Petoskey and the two made their home in Petoskey.  Burt went to work at Pellston Public Schools and taught there for the next 30 years, retiring in 1990.  Following his retirement, Burt started Burt’s Lawn Service and served a lot of the Bayview Community.   In addition to his passion for teaching, Burt also had a passion for sports and received a commendation for serving as a Umpire and Referee for 40 years.  He traveled all over the Tip of the Mitt and on Mackinac Island. You could find him at all the local games at the waterfront. He was a member of the Michigan High School Athletic Association.   

 

Burt is survived by his wife, Suzanne; 2 children, Amy Lynn (Jason) of Portland, OR and Ryan (Anastasia) of Atlanta, GA; and by many brothers and sisters-in-laws.

 

He was preceded in death by his parents and by three sisters, Marion, Margaret, and Barbara.

A graveside service will take place at a later date and will be announced.
