Charles Menefee Jr. Obituary

Charles Cull Menefee Jr., 81, passed away peacefully on Saturday, April 18, 2026.

Born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan, Charlie’s youth was filled with friends, sports, and a deep love for his community. A gifted athlete, he enjoyed an outstanding multi-sport career that included quarterbacking the team to the 1963 Class A football championship. His athletic accomplishments were later recognized with his induction into the Ann Arbor Pioneer Hall of Fame.

Charlie proudly served in the United States Navy before attending Michigan State University, where he was a devoted Spartan. There, he earned degrees in turfgrass management and political science. He spent much of his professional life as the golf course superintendent at Little Traverse Bay Golf Club, a role perfectly suited to his expertise as an agronomist and his lifelong passion for golf.

Charlie made his home in Harbor Springs, where he became a familiar and beloved presence in the community. He was married to his wife Mary Alice for forty-four years, and a proud father to his daughter, Molly Menefee (Trey), son Beau Menefee. He is also survived by a sister Marie, brother David, brother in laws Chuck Flemming, Ed Flemming, several nieces and nephews, and his beloved cat, Cece.

If there was a sport on television, Charlie was watching it. Golf, hockey, football—you name it, and he had an opinion on it. He was known for his sharp sense of humor and his stubborn streak, both of which made him unforgettable to those who knew and loved him. He could make people laugh, stand his ground when it mattered, and always kept life interesting.

Charlie will be remembered for his dedication to his work, his love of sports, and the many laughs he shared with family and friends.

A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorial donations be made to the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society in Charlie’s memory.
