Cheryl McClure Obituary

Cheryl Ann Macleod McClure, 75, of Petoskey, Michigan passed away on February 22,2025. Cheryl was born on August 12,1949, in Quincy, Massachusetts to John and Joyce (Derochea) Macleod. She grew up in Quincy and later moved to New Orleans, Louisiana with her family when she was fourteen years of age. She graduated from Nichols High School in New Orleans, LA.and in her 40’s went to college to study art and completed her bachelor’s degree in special education instruction. During her time as an adult student, she met and fell in love with Dennis McClure, moved to his home in Michigan, and the two were married on May 12, 2002. The two had an intimate ceremony at Cheryl’s sister's home in New Orleans.

Cheryl loved working with children. She spent many years as a counselor and supervisor at K-Bar-B Youth Ranch in Lacombe, LA. While there, she touched the lives of many of the residents, some of whom remained in touch with her for years after she and they had moved on. In her 40’s, she went to college and eventually spent a few years as a high school special education teacher before retiring to spend more time with her grandchildren. After her retirement, she continued working with differently abled children as a substitute instructor until her health conditions prohibited her from doing so.

Cheryl was always creative. Throughout the years, she dabbled in crafts such as macrame, ceramics, painting, and home decorating.  In her later years, she enjoyed pottery, gardening, quilting, and jewelry making.  She was also the Queen of the Red Hats in Alanson, MI.

She is survived by her adoring husband Dennis Alan McClure; daughters Brandy and Tammy; grandchildren Tucker, Violet, and Victoria; sister Dottie; and brothers Carl, Doug, and Alan.

The family will hold a celebration of life service for her in the spring/summer of 2025.

Those who would like to provide a memorial donation are asked to please consider the Little Traverse Bay Humane Society where Cheryl and Dennis adopted their beloved dog, Lulu. Cheryl was passionate about animal rescue and welfare and would want to see this organization continue to support these missions.
