Cheryl Hoppe Winter, 69, of Petoskey, Michigan, passed away peacefully at home on April 24, 2026. She was born March 5, 1957, in St. Louis, Missouri, to James and Ola Manuel Singleton.
Cheryl grew up in St. Louis and graduated from McKinley High School in 1975. She successfully ran her own home daycare for many years in Alanson, Michigan, where she lovingly cared for many local children while raising her two boys.
Her career thrived when she worked for the IRS in St. Louis while her sons were young. After moving to Michigan, her kindness and loving nature brightened the Petoskey area, where she worked as a caregiver at Sunnybank Assisted Living and Bayfront Home Care.
Cheryl met her soulmate and adventure partner, Tom, in August 2006. They were married on April 20, 2007, in Petoskey and shared many happy years together. Trips to the Upper Peninsula became regular adventures, along with treasure hunting at garage sales. Cheryl was always on the hunt for the next perfect pair of salt-and-pepper shakers. Cheryl was the epitome of the word “family.” She loved those she called family and spoiled her grandchildren relentlessly. It brought her true joy.
Cheryl is survived by her husband, Tom, and her children: Jason (Rachel), John, and stepsons Christopher (Ashley), Benjamin (Eileen), and Stephen (Lauren); and sisters Lee (Joe) and Joyce, and brother Willis (Heather). Eight grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews also survive her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, James and Ola Manuel Singleton; her sisters, Gloria Johnson, Lou Singleton, Kathy (Kitty) Sanchez, and Ina Viviano; her brother, Jesse Singleton; and her nephew, Tommy Singleton.
A funeral service will be held for Cheryl on Wednesday, April 29, 2026. Visitation will begin at 10:00 AM at Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey, Michigan, with service to follow at 11:00 AM; officiated by Pastor Sherry McGuffin. A luncheon will follow the service at the Cross of Christ Lutheran Church in Petoskey.
